When Should I Start Solids? A Pediatrician’s Complete Guide

By Dr. Rejitha Nandini — Pediatrician & Founder, Neeloos

As a pediatrician, this is one of the questions I hear most often in my clinic.

“Doctor, when do I start feeding my baby real food?”

Sometimes the mother asks nervously, worried she’s waited too long. Sometimes she asks because her mother-in-law has been insisting since the baby was three months old. And sometimes she asks because she genuinely doesn’t know — and nobody has given her a clear, honest answer.

So here it is.

The Right Age to Start Solids

The World Health Organization, the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, and twenty years of my own clinical experience all point to the same answer:

6 months.

Not four months. Not when the baby seems hungry. Not when the grandmother says so.

Six months is when your baby’s digestive system is mature enough to handle foods other than breast milk or formula. It is when the kidneys can process the mineral load of solid foods. And it is when the risk of allergies and digestive problems from early introduction is significantly reduced.

Before six months, your baby’s gut is still developing. Introducing solids too early can cause constipation, allergies, digestive discomfort, and in some cases, long-term gut sensitivity.

Wait for six months. It is worth it.

But What About Hungry Babies?

This is the most common reason mothers start solids early — the baby seems hungry all the time.

Here is what I tell mothers in my clinic: a growth spurt is not a sign that your baby needs solids. It is a sign that your baby needs more breast milk. Feed more frequently for a few days and your supply will adjust.

If you are genuinely concerned about your baby’s weight or hunger, please speak to your pediatrician before introducing solids early.

Signs Your Baby Is Ready for Solids

Age alone is not enough. Look for these signs together:

✅ Baby is at least 6 months old
✅ Baby can sit up with minimal support and hold their head steady
✅ Baby shows interest in food — watches you eat, reaches for your plate
✅ Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex (no longer automatically pushes food out of mouth)
✅ Baby can move food to the back of their mouth and swallow

If all these signs are present at 6 months, you are ready to begin.

How to Start Solids the Right Way

Start with single ingredients.
One food at a time. This allows you to identify any allergies or sensitivities easily. If you introduce three new foods at once and your baby reacts, you will not know which one caused it.

Start small.
One to two teaspoons once a day is enough to begin. This is not about nutrition yet — breast milk or formula remains the primary nutrition source until 12 months. This is about introducing tastes, textures, and the experience of eating.

Go slow.
Introduce each new food for 3 to 5 days before adding something new. Watch for rashes, digestive changes, or unusual fussiness.

Choose the right first foods.
Traditional Indian first foods are genuinely excellent choices. Ragi, red rice, and banana have been trusted by generations of Indian mothers — and modern nutrition science agrees with them.

What to Avoid in the First Year

🚫 Honey — risk of infant botulism before 12 months
🚫 Cow’s milk as a drink — before 12 months
🚫 Salt and sugar — kidneys are not ready
🚫 Whole nuts — choking hazard
🚫 Processed or packaged foods with additives
🚫 Fruit juices — no nutritional benefit, high sugar

A Note from My Clinic to Your Kitchen

Starting solids can feel overwhelming. Mothers come to me worried they are doing it wrong, starting too late, not giving enough variety, or somehow failing their baby.

You are not failing. You are figuring it out — and that already makes you a good mother.

Start simple. Start slow. Choose real, clean ingredients. And trust that your baby will guide you.
