Best First Foods for Indian Babies — What a Pediatrician Recommends

Walk into any supermarket today and you will find an entire aisle dedicated to baby food. Boxes, pouches, jars, and tins — each one promising to be the best thing for your baby.

It can feel overwhelming.

So let me make it simple for you. As a pediatrician who has guided thousands of families through starting solids, here is what I actually recommend — and why traditional Indian ingredients remain, in my opinion, the gold standard for baby’s first foods.

Why Traditional Indian First Foods Are Excellent

Before packaged baby food existed, Indian mothers fed their babies remarkably well. Ragi kanji. Banana mashed with a drop of ghee. Rice water. Simple, clean, nourishing foods that generations of healthy Indians grew up on.

These foods were not chosen randomly. They were chosen because they worked — because they were gentle, nourishing, easily available, and deeply familiar to the baby’s system.

Modern nutrition science has largely confirmed what our grandmothers already knew.

The Best First Foods for Indian Babies

1. Ragi (Finger Millet)

Best from: 6 months

Ragi is my number one recommendation for Indian babies starting solids.

It is rich in calcium, iron, and dietary fibre. It is naturally gluten-free. It is easy to digest. And it has been a staple first food in South Indian homes for centuries.

Sprouted ragi is even better — sprouting increases nutrient availability and makes it gentler on the digestive system.

How to use: Cook ragi powder with water or breast milk to a smooth porridge consistency. Start thin and gradually thicken as your baby gets used to it.

2. Kerala Nendran Banana (Nendrakaya)

Best from: 6 months

Not all bananas are equal. The Kerala Nendran banana is naturally higher in potassium, iron, and resistant starch than regular bananas — making it one of the most nutritious first foods available.

It is naturally sweet, which most babies love. It is easy on the digestive system. And it has been used as a first food in Kerala homes for as long as anyone can remember.

How to use: Mash ripe banana to a smooth consistency, or use Neeloos Kerala Banana Powder mixed with warm water or breast milk.

3. Red Rice (Njavara Ari)

Best from: 6 months

Red rice is a traditional Kerala grain that is significantly more nutritious than polished white rice. It is rich in iron, fibre, and antioxidants — and because it is less processed, it retains far more of its natural goodness.

It is gentle on the digestive system and provides steady, sustained energy for growing babies.

How to use: Cook red rice powder to a smooth porridge. It has a mild, earthy flavour that most babies accept easily.

4. Moong Dal (Green Gram)

Best from: 7 months

Moong dal is one of the easiest legumes for babies to digest. It is a good source of plant-based protein, iron, and B vitamins — all critical for your baby’s growth and brain development.

Sprouted moong is especially beneficial — sprouting significantly increases its iron and protein content.

How to use: Cook thoroughly and blend to a smooth consistency. Can be combined with rice or ragi for a more complete meal.

5. Sweet Potato

Best from: 6 months

Sweet potato is naturally sweet, easy to cook, and packed with beta-carotene — which converts to Vitamin A in the body and supports healthy vision, immunity, and skin.

It is one of the most universally accepted first foods across cultures, and for good reason.

How to use: Steam, peel, and mash to a smooth consistency. No seasoning needed.

What to Avoid as First Foods

1.Packaged cereals with added sugar or salt Honey
 2.Cow’s milk as a drink
 3.Fruit juices
4.Foods with artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives
5.Multi-ingredient foods before single ingredients are established

My Simple Rule for First Foods

One ingredient. Clean preparation. No additives.

That is it. You do not need expensive imported baby food. You do not need pouches with twelve ingredients. You need simple, real, traditionally trusted foods — prepared with care and given with love.

Your baby’s gut is new. Keep it simple.
