Njavara rice can be introduced from 6 months — making it one of the earliest and most appropriate first grains for Kerala babies.
It is gentle enough for a brand new eater and nutritious enough to make a real difference from the very first bowl.
How to Prepare Njavara Rice Porridge for Babies
Basic Njavara Porridge — 6+ Months
1. Add 2 tablespoons of Njavara rice powder to a pan
2. Add 150ml of water and whisk well to remove any lumps
3. Cook on a low flame for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring continuously
4. Allow to cool to a comfortable lukewarm temperature before serving
5. No salt, no sugar — the grain has a natural mild sweetness of its own
As your baby grows, you can enrich this porridge with a small amount of ghee, mashed banana, or expressed breast milk.
Why Kerala Mothers Are Returning to Njavara
There is a growing movement among Kerala mothers — particularly educated, health-conscious mothers — to return to traditional foods that their grandmothers used but their own generation forgot.
Njavara rice is at the centre of this movement.
Not because it is trendy. But because once mothers understand what it contains and what it does, the choice becomes obvious.
Your grandmother fed Njavara to her children because she knew it worked. Now you know why.
A Note from My Clinic
In all my years of practice, I have never seen a baby react badly to Njavara rice when it is properly prepared. It is one of the gentlest, most well-tolerated first foods I know.
If you are starting solids and looking for a first grain that is clean, nutritious, traditionally validated, and deeply rooted in Kerala food culture — Njavara rice is my recommendation.
